How to Make Your Eyes Look Younger

Being outside, even for a few minutes, exposes your skin to a war zone of skin-ravaging free radicals. But since living in a hermetic bubble probably isn’t an option, protect yourself during the day with antioxidants like vitamin C, green tea, idebenone, or CoffeeBerry extract—they’re the best at preventing skin-cell damage. Serums tend to deliver the strongest dose and penetrate the most effectively, so apply them first to clean skin before any other products.

We like Algenist Concentrated Reconstructing Serum(with green tea), Prevage Anti-Aging + Intensive Repair Daily Serum (with idebenone), and RevaléSkin Intense Recovery Treatment (with CoffeeBerry extract).

The bad news: Crinkled, crepey skin can start to appear around the eyes as early as your 20s. The good news: Extra-rich creams with glycerin squalene, or panthenol—some of the most potent hydrators—can help plump up skin and disguise fine lines. Two other star players are hyaluronic acid and dimethicone (both found in Lancôme Absolue Yeux Global Multi-Restorative Eye Concentrate). One draws water into skin cells while the other seals in moisture by creating an oil barrier.

If your eye cream doesn’t contain at least SPF 30 like Shiseido Sun Protection Eye Cream Broad Spectrum SPF 34 Sunscreen, wait until it’s fully absorbed and then layer on a regular sunscreen every single morning. Sensitive types will want one containing the nonirritating physical UV blockers zinc oxide or titanium dioxide to avoid feeling like your face is on fire (try Neutrogena Sensitive Skin Sunblock Lotion SPF 60+). And wear wide, UV-protective sunglasses: They’ll add another layer of defense and keep you from squinting, which is just one of the many causes of crow’s-feet.

To smooth out fine lines, look for ingredients like Argireline (a peptide in Patricia Wexler M.D. Dermatology Intensive 3-in-1 Eye Cream) and DMAE (an anti-inflammatory in Perricone MD High Potency Eye Lift), since both have a temporary tightening effect. Another quick fix: Blend a silicone-based primer over skin during the day to fill in shallow creases (we like Smashbox Photo Finish Oil-Free Foundation Primer). And dab Aquaphor Advanced Therapy Healing Ointment over your eye cream at night to hydrate. “It’s one of the best products for the under-eyes,” says Joshua Zeichner, a dermatologist in New York City.

Dark circles have an aging, Miss Havisham effect on young, bright eyes. But a concealer that’s slightly lighter and warmer than your skin can correct discoloration, illuminate, and make eyes appear bigger. Lancôme Le Correcteur Pro Concealer Palette has two shades to neutralize blue or purple tones and a powder to set the coverage. If you have an extra 20 seconds, a couple of squeezes of an eyelash curler opens eyes even more and prevents lashes from casting a shadow.

We’ve all wound up on the wrong side of a margarita-and-nacho happy-hour special. Here’s how to depuff after a late night: Soak a cotton ball in cold whole milk, which contains skin-soothing fats and proteins, and hold it over your eyes for ten minutes. If it was a really good night, add a lymphatic massage by gently pressing along your orbital bone, says Jeannette Graf, a dermatologist in Great Neck, New York. Short on dairy? Eye masks, like SK-II Signs Eye Mask, or even a bag of frozen peas, also zap inflammation and swelling. Finish with a caffeine-based product to hydrate and firm, like Garnier Skin Renew Anti-Puff Eye Roller (the cool metal applicator is a skin-calming bonus).

No matter how sleepy you are or how much waterproof, long-lasting, smudge-free eyeliner you have on, don’t rub your eyes. Ever. “The skin is so delicate, even rubbing off eye makeup can worsen crow’s-feet over time,” says Zeichner. Gently press down with a cotton pad soaked in makeup remover for 10 to 15 seconds instead.

Night is the time to fight aging with the big guns: retinoids. These vitamin-A derivatives—often called retinol on product packaging—do a serious number on lines and wrinkles, boosting collagen and elastin,as well as helping to minimize dark spots. Glow by Dr. Brandt Revitalizing Retinol Eye Cream (which also contains light-diffusing microscopic ruby particles) makes creases and bags practically disappear. If your skin reacts by turning red, raw, or dry, dial back your retinol use to two or three times a week.use-retinols-at-night
