Slip Away

When the slip was introduced in the 1920s, it was meant to be worn under a woman’s apparel as a way to smooth everything out. During World War I, women were discouraged to wear corsets – war rationing meant the metal that would help construct corsets went to the war cause instead. Slip dresses – in a way – replaced corsets

Blue

Levi Strauss, a pedlar who had immigrated to North America from Bavaria, followed the Gold Rush in California in the 1850s to sell his goods. The miners asked him for sturdy and durable work pants. With the help of a tailor, Strauss put together work pants that were supposedly made out of the canvas he had brought with him for the assembly of tents. In the 1860s, he began to fabricate pants made from heavyweight denim, and because the pants were dyed with indigo they were named “blue jeans”.

Print Everywhere

In Britain, musical taste and styles of dress were closely linked and it was the mod look which first popularised the simple geometric shapes typical of the 1960s. By the mid-sixties, the flared A-line was in style for dresses, skirts and coats. Slim fitting, brightly coloured garments were sold cheaply in boutiques all over ‘Swinging London’ and had tremendous influence throughout Europe and the US

Furthest Thing

Animal pelts, or fur and leather, have been used by humankind as clothing since the earliest times to protect their bodies from climatic conditions and harm.

By the 13th and 14th Centuries, the growing mercantile class who was becoming wealthy and powerful through trade and commerce began to adopt the manners and fashion of dress of the aristocracy. They liked to adorn themselves and their wives in luxury furs which had been restricted for royalty and the ruling classes

Flying Skirt

Skirts are one of the oldest styles of garment known to mankind: after the loincloth, it was the skirt that graced the human form. Once a rectangular piece of material, be it animal skin or leaves woven together, was wrapped around the waist, the essential skirt was created.

Lace

Since lace evolved from other techniques, it is impossible to say that it originated in any one place, although the city whose name was first associated with lace is Venice.
